The Cultures of Control project is an international research network initiated by Dr. Frida Beckman. It is hosted by the Department of Culture and Aesthetics at Stockholm University, and funded by the Swedish Research Council as well as by the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences.
The key aim of the project is to explore the implications of what is sometimes called control society on cultural expression. It has recently been argued that earlier models of cultural critique no longer suffice to theorize the political function of cultural expression in a late-capitalist logic that works to incorporate any forms of critique within itself. The scholars of the network respond to this challenge and explore ways in which the relation between culture and politics may be re-theorized.
The project includes a group of international scholars from Europe and the U.S. and is affiliated with various other projects such as the SLSAeu:Control conference at Stockholm University in June 14-17 2016 (http://control2016.com), The Society for the Study of Biopolitical Futures (http://www.biopoliticalfutures.net), and Histories of Violence (http://historiesofviolence.com). In the period between 2016-2017, the network will host a workshop series entitled Dialogues on Cultures of Control and which will include open events with high-profile international speakers. Topics include security, war, nature, and animals.
